William Charles ('Lou') Andrews was born in Higham, (Newmarket Q2-1920 3B:987), believed to be son of Horace and Emily E ANDREWS (née COOKE).
If these were his parents, in the 1939 register they were at 75 Upper Green, Higham, father [18-11-1887] a shepherd; mother [15-8-1893]; brother George H [14-9-1918] farm worker; sisters Diana [1-11-1922] and Irene June [10-6-1930]. There are 2 closed records.





HMS Wakeful was a type destroyer, built on the Clyde by John Brown, launched 6th October 1917 - pennant number H-88, changed to L-91 just before Dunkirk
On Wednesday, 29th May 1940 HMS Wakeful (Cdr. Ralph Lindsay Fisher, RN) was torpedoed and sunk while participating in the evacuation of French, English, and Belgian troops off Dunkirk. She was attacked by E-Boat S30 whilst off Dunkirk and hit in forward Boiler Room by one of the two torpedoes fired. She split in two with the forward part sinking immediately. Only one of the 640 soldiers embarked survived with 25 of the ship's company. Rescue was carried out by HM Minesweepers GOSSAMER, LYDD, HM Destroyer GRAFTON and HM Drifter COMFORT.
